November 7, 2017 is creeping rapidly closer and the support has been AMAZING!
First, School News.
The Bond. New CMS Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox has been appearing almost daily promoting the School Bonds at appearances in schools, Rotary Clubs, Chamber of Commerce events, a Charlotte Observer forum, etc. I am also strongly in support of this Bond referendum. CMS capital and physical needs are vast. Those people I hear advocating against generally do not agree with the proposed list of projects, or do not trust the CMS Board or Staff to spend the money appropriately. Those concerns must be addressed openly and candidly, but voting NO on the bond is the wrong way to protest such concerns. Thanks to brilliant fiscal stewardship, Mecklenburg County enjoys a AAA Bond Rating, making borrowing as absolutely cheap as possible. To me this is a no brainer and I expect the Bond will pass by a wide margin.
Continuing back to school issues:
- Magnet transportation insanity – up at 4:45 a.m. to get bus at 5:30 for 7:00 a.m. school start. Start time of 7 a.m. for high schools has been repeatedly shown to be wrong by pediatricians. We must change this.
- No lockers in middle schools meaning 80 lb kids with 40 lb backpacks; again not recommended by doctors (see a theme here?).
- Principal announcing physical activity as consequence for missing homework. This is directly against NC Dept. of Public Instruction regulations, but hopefully we’ve found a quick correction via the new CMS Ombudsman’s Office!
- If you see school issues, please let me know, as help may exist.
The Mecklenburg County Republican Party endorsed me as their District 5 School Board candidate, and put my name, and only my name, on 10,000 “voter guides” that they will hand out at the polls and prior. This is a HUGE endorsement for me and likely worth several thousand votes, more than any other single endorsement.
