How would you involve teachers, students, parents, and community members / supporters in improving support for Public Education in Mecklenburg County?
Olympic HS and the Bosch Rexroth Advanced Manufacturing Center is a prime example of such connections successful already. Alignment SW Charlotte is an excellent model, including the STEMersion program this past summer connecting 50 CMS teachers with area employers. The Lake Norman Educational Collaborative is another excellent example of connecting employers with schools. Charlotte Area Society for Human Resource Managers in 2014-15 provided industry volunteers for career readiness training at four schools.
At Olympic, I have participated in several “Career Readiness Speed Dating” events, where 100 industry professionals, and 200 students, held rapid-fire interviews exposing kids to many different careers, and interviewing practice, in a short period. There is no reason such same tactics cannot be deployed across every high CMS high school.
CMS is better using social media, but its website remains unacceptable. If a school has a need, it must be able through easy technology to let the community know of such needs as there is tremendous support occurring every day with businesses, churches and non-profits all around CMS. I would like to see regular engagement and feedback surveying of parents, teachers, and the business/faith communities so that decisions are not base on potentially faulty assumptions.
