Why are you seeking election as a Member of the CMS School Board?
I am seeking election to make sure that our schools are effectively managed and maintained to make sure we are preparing our kids for the future. My four year old Hazel will be in public schools for many years to come and I come from a family of teachers. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools are the engine of our community, the key to our collective future. I have seen lightning in a bottle in Alignment SW Charlotte, where Olympic HS moved from 53% composite EOG in 2005 to approaching 90% in 2014, through a connection of elementary and middle feeder schools with high schools, employers, and community and faith groups. There are good jobs available right now for a trained workforce, and every student must be equipped for whatever step awaits them after graduation.
CMS has a tough reputation locally but a sterling reputation nationally. We have challenges, to be sure, but CMS is doing great things every day, and we deserve to be proud. The Board cannot do much on teacher pay but through the superintendent it can make sure that every employee is valued like the heroes they are. I am the only candidate in this election who can bridge gaps between our urban and suburban constituents, between the Board of Education and the County Commission, and between Charlotte and the General Assembly. We must break down silos.
Our region has changed fundamentally in the past twenty years as 500,000 new residents arrived from all over. We must proactively plan for our future, and the opportunity cost of inaction is extreme.
